Compliance is no longer just about keeping up with regulations. It’s becoming a strategic part of how businesses manage risk, protect operations, and make informed decisions. Ivana Gonzalez, Director of Compliance at OIA Global, shares her perspective on how the role of compliance is evolving and why it matters more than ever.
"I think we`re definitely seeing a shift. For a long time, compliance was sometimes viewed as a burden or even a blocker, the group asking for more information or telling operations that something couldn`t move until an issue was resolved. That`s changing. Companies are starting to understand that compliance isn`t there to slow down the business. It`s there to protect it and help it operate responsibly.
We`re also seeing much more scrutiny from governments and regulatory authorities, which puts greater responsibility on everyone involved in the transaction, including freight forwarders and customs brokers. It`s no longer enough to simply move the freight or process the entry. We need to understand who we`re doing business with, what we`re moving, where it`s coming from and going to, and whether there are compliance concerns that need to be addressed."
